Disc injuries are a more serious complication of joint stress that occur in the spine, usually from excess compressive forces. While it is common to sustain these injuries from more serious incidents like a sports injury, car accident or fall, they are also known to occur “randomly” or to be completely undetectable in their milder forms until they become worse and start producing symptoms. Disc injuries usually come in the form of a bulging disc in their more milder form, a herniated disc as they get more severe, or in their most severe form – full extrusion of the disc into the spinal canal.
The result can be significant pain, or if the disc is pressing a nerve, shooting pain/burning sensation into the appendages, numbness and tingling, or weakness. It can be an emergency situation if there is loss of bowel or bladder control
