One of the most significant ergonomic stressors on the body in the modern era is forward head posture. Be it cell phone usage, desk work, or driving, the numerous forces pulling the body forward put excess stress on the neck and upper to mid spine, causing the joints in that region to become stuck and immobile. This leads to stiffness and pain throughout that area, sometimes between the shoulder blades or over one of them in particular.
Long term complications include a “hunch back” appearance or the dreaded “hump” that forms at the base of the neck which can be painful and is often an issue for people cosmetically. Even worse can be impingement of the nerves at the base of the neck causing tingling/ numbness, pain, and weakness in the back of the arm, forearm, or pinky and ring fingers.
